Darío, from the thought of retirement to the podium of the 2021 CDMX Marathon

Breaking the bar at the goal of the 2021 Mexico City Marathon has been a 14-year journey for Darío Castro. At 18 years of age, an uncle instilled in him the long-distance races and enrolled him in one and from that, he has dedicated his life to training as a marathoner.

But not always everything flowed. He had to overcome his own thinking when in 2017 he believed that marathons were something very difficult, today he does not even think about it.

“At 18 I started, I kept participating and I wanted to keep improving and little by little I climbed until I reached high performance. In 2016 I made my debut as an elite in the LALA Marathon in Torreón, Coahuila with a time of 2 hours 26 minutes. It was a difficult marathon, I did not want to continue running in a marathon because of the effort that is made and it takes to finish it “. I struggled but we discussed them with my coach, we know they are years of work and preparation, ”the 32-year-old marathoner tells El Economista.

The first place in the 42-kilometer race by stopping the timer at 2 hours 14 minutes and 51 seconds, meant something historic for Mexico’s return to the podium since 2009, when Edilberto Méndez did it for the last time. They were also two Mexicans, since for just a second ago, Eloy Sánchez crossed the finish line.

“It was coincidence, we did good teamwork, he is a partner I have known for years in athletics, we have participated in many competitions and we agreed at the end.”

Both marathoners are members of the National Army, a place that has given him the opportunity to make sport his mission. His previous record time was in December 2017 at the Gobernador Mexicali Marathon, Baja California, in which he clocked 2 hours 17 minutes and one second. Having surpassed his own record on Sunday motivates him to summon his coach to plan the preparation for the 2024 Olympic Games.
