Cuba detains the opposition Fariñas three days before the prohibited demonstration

The Cuban dissident Guillermo Fariñas was arrested on Friday in Santa Clara (center), three days before an opposition demonstration prohibited by the communist authoritieshis mother told AFP.

“They arrested him this Friday, they took him away around 2:10 pm,” Alicia Hernández said by phone, adding that her 59-year-old son is being treated with antibiotics for a urinary tract infection.

“An ambulance and two police patrols arrived and took him to the Arnaldo Milian Castro hospital,” he added.

“They told me that tomorrow (Saturday) a fiscal to accuse him, but we don’t know why. “

His arrest comes three days before a manifestation scheduled for Monday by the opposition to demand the release of political prisoners. The mobilization was banned by the authorities, who consider that its organizers want to provoke a regime change with the support of Washington.

Guillermo Fariñas, 59, Sakharov Prize for European Parliament Freedom of Thought 2010, carried out 23 hunger strikes during the 2000s to protest against the government, which significantly weakened his health.

A psychologist by training, independent journalist and human rights activist, he joined the Patriotic Union of Cuba (Unpacu), the most active opposition organization, led by José Daniel Ferrer, currently in prison.

The government, which denies the existence of political prisoners in Cuba, considers the opposition illegal, which it accuses of being financed by USA.
