During 2020, 1 million 945,000 women were enrolled in the higher education system, which represented a decrease of 3% compared to the level registered in 2019, before the arrival of Covid-19, according to data from the SEP and the ONE.
In contrast, the situation for the male student population at the higher level was positive, with an increase of 1% in the total number of students enrolled.
This situation reflects that student desertion, at least in universities and postgraduate degrees, had the face of a woman; the causes are related to structural gender inequalities such as work overload at home, care for third parties, domestic violence O unwanted pregnancies.
