Almost 90 percent of people in intensive care with COVID-19 were not fully vaccinated, says an update from the BC health minister.

In a tweet Wednesday, Adrian Dix provided a breakdown of the province’s most seriously ill COVID-19 patients by age and vaccination status.

Of 137 people in intensive care, 116 had not received an injection of the COVID-19 vaccine, while four were partially vaccinated.

Among unvaccinated patients, about 46 percent are 50 years or older. Younger people in their 30s and 40s also made up a significant part of the seriously ill, comprising 28%.

The data also shows 17 groundbreaking cases, cases among the fully vaccinated, in the ICU. Among these, the majority, or 14 cases, are in people aged 60 to 79 who were immunized at the beginning of the vaccination campaign. The remaining three cases are patients between 20, 30 and 50 years old.

Also Wednesday, the Health Ministry reported 430 new infections, nearly half of which were at Fraser Health. British Columbia’s most populous health authority had 202 new cases, followed by Interior Health with 88, Vancouver Coastal Health with 56, Island Health with 47 and Northern Health with 37.

The new cases add to BC’s count of 4,373 active cases.

Six additional deaths, four at Fraser Health, and one in the interior of British Columbia and on Vancouver Island, bring the province’s total death toll to 2,192 since the pandemic began last year.

The Health Ministry did not provide an update on the number of people hospitalized with COVID-19, citing an error in the data.

More than 4.1 million people who make up 90.1 percent of eligible British Columbia have received a first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, while 85.5 percent are fully vaccinated.
