New Brunswick reported 99 new cases of COVID-19 and announced that the first children ages five to 11 received the pediatric COVID-19 vaccine on Friday.

Since Tuesday, more than 9,300 appointments have been booked for children between the ages of five and 11, the province said in a statement.

To meet demand, the NB government said that new children’s clinics have been added in Zone 1 (Moncton region) and Zone 3 (Fredericton region).

More than 130 pharmacies will also participate in the administration of the vaccine. They will begin receiving shipments between December 2 and 8.

There are 18 people in intensive care and another 38 in the hospital for a total of 56 hospitalized people.

“Large numbers of cases are always cause for concern, but we know that, once investigated, most new cases are the result of contact with a previously known case,” said Dr. Jennider Russell, the chief physician at the province, in a statement.

So far, 87.8 percent of eligible New Brunswick residents are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and 93.5 percent have received their first dose.

A case has been confirmed at the Boys & Girls Club of Saint John After School in Zone 2 (Saint John region), the province announced.
