Montreal public health officials say that one in five city residents who are tested for COVID-19 is positive.

The city’s public health director, Dr. Mylène Drouin, told reporters today that 90 percent of COVID-19 cases in Montreal involve the Omicron variant of the new coronavirus and that the test’s positivity rate it is between 18 and 20 percent.

She says Montreal health officials identified more than 3,600 new cases Wednesday and says the number is likely an underestimate, adding that 60 percent of infections involve people between the ages of 18 and 44. .

There are about 181 people hospitalized with the disease in the city and officials say they are postponing some non-essential services and reorganizing staff to increase the number of beds dedicated to COVID-19 to 500.

Drouin says Montreal public health officials are no longer able to track all the new cases reported every day because the numbers are staggering.

The Department of Health today reports 9,397 new cases of COVID-19 throughout Quebec and an increase of 28 hospitalizations related to COVID-19.
