COVID-19: Hospitals continue to fill up in Ontario

Ontario hospitals continue to fill with patients infected with COVID-19 with more than 200 people now in intensive care, the highest since mid-March.

Data released Monday by the province shows that 202 Ontarians are now battling SARS-CoV-2 in intensive care, including nearly half who are on ventilators. A total of 1,301 patients are infected with the virus in hospitals in the country’s largest province.

At the same time, two deaths from the virus have been announced by health authorities, for a total of 12,632 to date.

The number of cases confirmed by PCR test was established at 2,219, a largely underestimated number. According to assessments conducted on sewage samples, in fact, authorities estimate that tens of thousands, possibly more than 100,000 Ontarians are contracting the virus every day as the BA.2 subvariant spreads.

The Ontario science table, however, estimated last week that the proliferation of the sixth wave of COVID-19 seemed to have peaked and was tending to stagnate or even decline.

Despite everything, the effects of this wave should be felt for a few more weeks in the hospitals of the province.
