COVID-19 Hospitalizations in Alberta Continued to Fall Friday | The Canadian News

The number of Albertans receiving hospital care for COVID-19 continued to decline on Friday.

There were 660 people in the hospital on Friday, 141 of them in the ICU. That compares with 677 in the hospital and 146 in the ICU on Thursday.

Of the 519 non-ICU patients, 72.9 percent are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated, tweeted Dr. Deena Hinshaw, the province’s chief medical officer for health.

As for the 141 ICU patients, 87.9% are not vaccinated or are not partially vaccinated.

An additional 466 new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed on Friday from 11,495 tests. There are currently 6,386 active cases of COVID-19 in the province.

The Calgary area continued to lead the province with active cases with 1,779. The Edmonton area had 1,412, there were 1,139 active cases in the central area, the southern area had 652 active cases, and there were 1,401 active cases in the northern area. There were three active cases not affiliated with a specific area.

During the past 24 hours, five new deaths were reported. Four had pre-existing conditions.

Two of the deaths were in the Calgary area: a man in his 20s and a man in his 60s.

Elsewhere, an 80-year-old woman in the North area and an 80-year-old woman in the Edmonton area also died.

A woman in her 40s also died in the southern zone with no known pre-existing conditions.

There have now been 3,142 deaths attributed to COVID-19 in Alberta.

“I extend my sincere condolences to all who are grieving the loss of a loved one to COVID-19 or any other cause,” Hinshaw tweeted.

To date, 87.3 percent of eligible Albertans ages 12 and older have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. Of the same group, 80.9% are fully vaccinated.

There have been 325,983 Albertans diagnosed with COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic. Of these, 316,455 have been recovered.
