COVID-19: Guelph’s top doctor finishes work-from-home order | The Canadian News

With the Government of Ontario easing COVID-19 restrictions on some businesses from Monday, Guelph’s medical officer says her work-from-home order will also end.

Dr. On December 16, 2021, Nicola Mercer issued a notice instructing those responsible for a business or organization to let their employees work from home, unless the nature of their work requires them to be on site.

The announcement was made in response to growing COVID-19 cases caused by the Omicron variant.

“We need to take action and use proven public health measures such as restricting social interactions to ensure our schools stay open and we limit the pressure on our local businesses during one of their most important times of the year,” Mercer said at the time.

A day after the announcement, the province introduced new restrictions on capacity restrictions, food and beverage service and event sizes.

Earlier this month on January 5, the province imposed additional restrictions on businesses, including a ban on indoor dining and the closure of gyms and movie theaters.

Mercer said the decision to lift her work-from-home order brings Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph in line with easing the restrictions that will take effect Monday.

“In connection with the province’s relaxation of COVID-19 restrictions, my instruction letter requiring distance work will be revoked on Monday,” she said.

“While teleworking is no longer needed, I still appeal to individuals, organizations and businesses to make the home-based option where possible.”
