Concerns raised about the development of MIL Montreal

The amendment to the by-law allowing the development of MIL Montreal raises concerns among citizens, revealed a recent report.

It was during a public consultation that the citizens of the Outremont borough raised concerns about safety, mobility, connection with neighboring neighborhoods, the lack of green spaces and the potential for gentrification in adjacent sectors.

Remember that if these changes are adopted, they will allow the “construction of an elementary school by the Center de services scolaire Marguerite-Bourgeoys (CSSMB), the construction of a Center for Innovation in Digital Intelligence by the University of Montreal and to remove the Atlantic sector from by-law 06-069 so that it is instead under the responsibility of the urban planning regulations of the borough of Outremont.”

Thus, the commission says it is in favor of the amendments, but makes reservations to the recommendations, which will have to be modified before the adoption of the changes to the by-law.

“The redevelopment of a site like that of the MIL illustrates the difficulties of thoroughly rethinking its relationship to the surrounding neighborhoods and to the city as a whole. This applies to functional, material and spatial aspects, but also, and above all, to social, cultural, land and economic dynamics. The commission’s work thus highlights some of the effects of MIL on surrounding residential areas. In this case, the latter have often found themselves in a blind spot of development practices,” commented the MIL Montreal commission in a press release.
