Colima decriminalizes abortion; is the first entity to recognize pregnant people

With 14 votes in favor, 5 votes against and 4 abstentions, the local Congress of Colima decriminalized abortion until the 12th week of gestation and became the first federative entity in the country to recognize pregnant people.

This decision implies withdrawing from the local Penal Code the voluntary interruption of pregnancy as a crime, as well as initiating structural reforms in all spheres involved to guarantee women and pregnant persons access to this right safely and free of charge.

Colima joins the, now, six entities that have this right guaranteed: Mexico City, Oaxaca, Hidalgo, Veracruz and Baja California.

Even though only 6 out of 32 states have made progress in matters of reproductive and sexual rights, the Supreme Court declared that in Mexico it is unconstitutional to penalize women and pregnant people for voluntarily interrupting their pregnancies until week 12, which means that no one can confront legal proceedings for abortion. There is still legislation in 26 states to guarantee that people can access this right for free and safely.
