Climate change is a global issue that is here to stay, it will not depend on what Mexico does, but it must be a pioneer given the circumstances we are already experiencing; droughts in the north of the country, floods in the south of Mexico and hailstorms in the center not seen before.
And although a few days ago the Federal Government, under the command of Andrés Manuel López Obrador, announced 10 measures that will be taken in order to combat it, among them; modernize 16 hydroelectric plants and reduce 98% of gas, the reality is that this is like an improvement in the face of the fever that is being counted on.
Medicine must be of a higher level if you really want to do something to stop the climate changes that affect us all; not only with these phenomena that we are already witnessing, but with blackouts that will be more and more continuous, and the lack of tools to attend to the needs or emergencies that exist and are coming.
What can be done? It is not simple, and even less so when the Federal and State Governments must turn to see private initiative as allies, if they really want to take firm steps, do something in depth and not just in form.
Accelerating renewable energies, reactivating permits and works for solar and photovoltaic parks, so that they start up is the beginning.
Stop burning natural gas is also a priority. When this administration began, 155 million cubic feet of gas were burned and today we are burning 406 million cubic feet, which is like burning money and affecting the atmosphere.
Although it is true that the Federal Government promised to increase the production of electricity in renewables, by 2 thousand Gigawatts, but 26 thousand are needed, so, according to specialists such as Enrique de la Madrid, they are not offering even 10% of what what is needed
In addition to this, 35% of the goal of electricity from renewables will not be met, so much so that the CFE, under the direction of Manuel Barttlet, has already said that by 2024 we will barely reach 30% of the goal.
Ideally, it is no longer to produce fuel oil or gasoline, but rather chemical products. Hence, the announced measures do not go to the bottom.
And the urgency for Mexico to really move to renewable energy is determined, given that the problems are not reforms but training, capacity and investment in the face of the potential that it has as a country.
It is a great opportunity for Mexico to produce and generate economic energy and thereby attract investment and develop jobs. The question always is if in Mexico it will be possible to take a real step towards what had already begun to take place, the generation of renewable energies?
Two years after the end of this administration, the candidates for the presidency will have to consider and plan real, realistic and applicable strategies, which translate into 8 million more poor people, as well as reversing the more than 120 thousand homicides in the last 3 years, 15 million more people without access to health because they were left without popular insurance. Is it possible to move forward?
