Claudia Sheinbaum says IP agrees with new digital tax

Most of the capital’s businessmen agree with the establishment of a new tax on digital parcel platforms, assured the head of Government of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo.

At a press conference, the local president explained that a few days ago a meeting was held between the head of the city’s Secretariat for Administration and Finance, Luz Elena González Escobar, with most of the business chambers and from this meeting, the intention of the new tax was explained.

“Most of the cameras in the Mexico City they totally agree, it will be reported very soon. It has nothing to do with the workers of these platforms who, in reality, require better working conditions, it has nothing to do with a user charge. It has to do with these resources, which mean a very high percentage that go out of the country ”, he deepened.

The new initiative seeks to reform by 2022 the addition of a new article 307 TER, which would establish a charge of 2% of the total amount for each delivery of individuals or companies that operate as digital parcels.

The new concept must be paid monthly for the use and exploitation of the infrastructure of the Mexico City.

The leader of the local Executive recalled that this is not the first time that a local tax has been applied to a digital platform, precisely in 2020 a tax was approved on hosting services, such as Airbnb.

“In the case of Uber, for example, it was long ago approved that they pay a percentage, which is used precisely for the renovation of the Vehicle Park of taxis and public transport,” he stressed.

Activities will not be closed

Despite the arrival of the Omicron variant, the head of government also ruled out that economic activities will be closed, as well as taking additional measures.

“We do not have any element that tells us that we have to take additional measures, hospitalizations continue to decline in the city, nor do we have an increase in infections,” he said.

“If we see that there is an increase in hospitalizations, we would call the population to greater protection measures, but under no circumstances is there any element that tells us that we should take action at this time. In addition, we believe that with the number of people who are vaccinated in the city, the beginning of the third dose for older adults, would have no reason to close any economic activity, “added the president.
