Clashes between hitmen and attacks on civilians marked 2021

In 2021, the clashes between hit men, body discoveries and even attacks against civilians did not stop. During the year that is ending, the Causa en Común organization recorded more than 4,500 atrocious events.

Among the events that caused the greatest social commotion are, for example, that on January 7, an armed attack took place during a wake at a home in Celaya, Guanajuato; nine people were killed at the scene.

In April, the Secretary of Public Security of Michoacán, Israel Patron Reyes, confirmed that members of the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel (CJNG) used drones with C4 explosives to attack elements of the State Police in Aguililla.

On September 19, 2021, people aboard a motorcycle delivered a gift-shaped package containing explosives to the Barra 1604 restaurant in Salamanca, Guanajuato. The owner of the place, Mario Alberto Hernández, and the manager, Mauricio Romero Morales, died.

On October 26, in Fresnillo, Zacatecas, an attack took place at a wake at a home in the Esparza neighborhood; one person died and two more were injured.

On November 5, a commando of hitmen stormed the beach of Puerto Morelos, in Cancun, and opened fire on two drug traffickers from a rival gang, in an episode in front of hundreds of tourists.

On November 18, the bodies of 10 people were found hanging from a bridge in the municipality of Ciudad Cuauhtémoc, in Zacatecas, an entity where the violence caused by clashes between members of the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel and the Sinaloa Cartel does not cease.

On November 25, armed individuals carried out an armed attack on the Municipal Palace of Guaymas, Sonora, which was aimed at assassinating the municipal security secretary, Andrés Humberto Cano, and caused the death of a woman, and two men, one of the which was hitman.

On November 29, armed individuals shot at a man who was on Majahua beach in Acapulco, Guerrero, in front of dozens of tourists; two armed men got out of a boat and fired.

Since January, in different municipalities of Michoacán the confrontations between criminals for control of the plaza have not ceased.

On December 1, nine prisoners escaped from the Tula Social Reintegration Center (Cereso), after an armed commando exploded three car bombs at the entrance to said prison.

Guanajuato, the most violent

According to Common Cause, between January and October of this year there were 4,527 “atrocities” such as the discovery of clandestine graves, multi-homicides, burns, lynchings or acts of torture.

The states with the most atrocities were Guanajuato (at least 327), followed by Jalisco (at least 227), the State of Mexico (at least 221), Michoacán (at least 191), Puebla and Veracruz (at least 175 each) . In contrast, according to Common Cause, the states with the lowest number of atrocities were: Coahuila (at least 14), Durango and Yucatán (at least 18 in each), Aguascalientes and Baja California Sur (at least 23 in each) .
