The City of Windsor is asking for public input about an organic waste collection program in the works.

The Essex Windsor Solid Waste Authority, in partnership with the city and County of Essex, is preparing a regional food and organic waste diversion program that will be implemented in 2025.
Residents are invited to complete an online survey to contribute to the planning process. The survey will remain available through the city’s website, citywindsor.cauntil May 31.
Rotting food in landfills produces methane, a greenhouse gas more potent than carbon dioxide. Under the Waste Free Ontario Act, most municipalities are required to meet provincial organic waste diversion targets by 2025 through curbside collection, public-drop off depots, or community composting areas, depending on the municipality’s size.

Windsor city council and Essex County council have agreed in principal to participate in a regional organic diversion program, although the Town of Essex and Town of Kingsville have stated they wish to be excluded.
