Chamber of Deputies ratifies Pablo Gómez as head of the FIU

Pablo Gomez was ratified by the Plenary of the Chamber of Deputies as head of the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) of the Ministry of Finance, replacing Santiago Nieto Castillo.

With 304 votes in favor, 95 against and 35 abstentions, the deputies endorsed the appointment of Pablo Gómez, proposed by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

During the session, the appointments of Maria Del Carmen Bonilla Rodriguez as Head of the Public Credit Unit and of Fernando Renoir Baca Rivera, as Head of the Coordination Unit with Federal Entities.

During his appearance before the Finance and Public Credit Commission of the Chamber of Deputies, held on Tuesday, November 23, Pablo Gómez Álvarez affirmed that the primary functions of the FIU are to protect the national financial system and the economy, through the fight against money laundering and corruption. Therefore, he also pointed out that the Unit “is not a police station, nor is it a judicial investigation agency, nor is it a bureaucratic office to authorize certain activities and services.”

It should be remembered that López Obrador proposed Pablo Gómez to head the UIF, after Santiago Nieto submitted his resignation from office due to the controversy surrounding his wedding with the counselor of the National Electoral Institute (INE) Carla Humphrey, In Guatemala, the deputies expressed their concerns about the results that the body would have in the fight against corruption, in addition to its action in accordance with the law, without partisan objectives.
