CF Montreal defeats Atlanta to move into the top 4 in the MLS East standings | CBC Sports

A late header from Joaquin Torres was enough for CF Montreal to earn a 2-1 victory against visiting Atlanta United in Major League Soccer action on Saturday.

The win moved Montreal to fourth place in the Eastern Conference and extended their unbeaten streak to six games in MLS, tying a franchise record.

Kamal Miller also scored for Montreal (4-3-2) while Marcelino Moreno scored for Atlanta (3-3-3).

Miller opened the scoring less than five minutes into the match, taking advantage of a Djordje Mihailovic free kick.

After the goal, Montreal seemed to sit back and invite pressure from Atlanta, conceding 73 per cent of possession at the half.

The pressure invited dangerous chances and, just after the 10-minute mark, a Thiago Almada free kick forced a save by Montreal goalkeeper Sebastian Breza.

Almada came back minutes later with a long shot that almost hit the top corner.

Atlanta struck early in the half as Montreal continued to struggle to keep the ball.

After six minutes, Moreno found some separation in the area and finished off the post.

The early equalizer was enough to wake Montreal up and they immediately responded with a golden opportunity that forced a goal-line clearance from defenseman Andrew Gutman.

As Montreal continued to press for the go-ahead goal, Miller followed up with a brilliant dribble with a cross that found Torres’ head to the delight of the vocal Stade Saputo crowd.

Both teams return to action on May 7, when Montreal hosts Orlando City SC, while Atlanta continues its road trip against Chicago Fire FC.

Toronto FC loses to Cincinnati

Ian Murphy and Luciano Acosta scored goals as visiting FC Cincinnati held off a late charge from Toronto FC to win 2-1 in Saturday’s MLS game.

The victory was the first in three career visits to Cincinnati’s BMO Field, which has recorded three of 17 career league wins over TFC. Cincinnati doubled but didn’t break in five minutes of frenetic stoppage time as Toronto charged hard for the tying goal.

Jesús Jiménez scored his seventh of the season for TFC, whose three-game home winning streak was snapped.

Toronto (3-4-2) was coming off a 5-4 loss to New York City in a wild game at Citi Field that saw TFC take a 2-0 lead only to concede the next five goals. That loss snapped Toronto’s (3-0-1) four-game unbeaten streak.

TFC have yet to keep a clean sheet this season. His last shutout in the league was 18 games ago: a 0-0 draw at Colorado last September.

Saturday’s game was the start of a rare series of back-to-back leagues. The teams meet again next Wednesday at “Star Wars Night” at Cincinnati’s TQL Stadium.
