CEO survey: 45% of Catalans are in favor of bringing forward the start of the school year


  • 74.5% of those interviewed support the reduction of ratios in the classrooms, one of the demands of the striking teachers

Third day of strike of teachers and teachers in Catalonia. The ‘conseller’ Josep Gonzalez-Cambray has not been able to suffocate the mobilizations against the Department of Education for the new competency model curricula, the C2 requirement for Catalan, the Justice’s decision on linguistic immersion, the lowering of ratios and the reversal of the cuts, in addition of the interim situation. The straw that broke the camel’s back was the announcement of the early start of the school year, a measure that the head of Education announced together with the ‘president’ Pere Aragones without negotiating with the educational community.

According to the latest omnibus survey of the Center for Opinion Studies (CEO) of the Generalitat, 45.2% of Catalans are in favor of advancing the school year so that students arrive in the classrooms before the Diada. On September 5 it will begin infant and primary and on September 7, ESO, Baccalaureate and Vocational Training. The 36.5%, on the other hand, are against of this decision of the Conselleria, and the 17.9% do not speak. These data were collected between November 17 and December 17, 2021, with face-to-face interviews with 1,200 Catalans, that is, before the announcement of the ‘conseller’ on February 11.

One of the teachers’ demands, the reduction in the number of students per classroomhave broad social support: 74.5% of Catalans are in favor of lowering the ratios, while 19.2% think that the current figures are already ideal.

This survey also shows that 40.3% of those interviewed think that the centers of the educational system of Catalonia should be public ownershipand that 57.4% consider that the current model -which contemplates concerted and private ownership- is already correct.

Regarding the measures decreed by the pandemic in the classrooms, 72% of Catalans positively value that the centers were open last year, a measure that is especially popular among employees because 75% appreciate it.
