CDN-NDG mayoral candidate Sue Montgomery wants to split the municipality in two – Montreal | The Canadian News

Côte-des-Neiges-Notre-Dame-de-Grâce’s incumbent mayor Sue Montgomery unveiled her electoral platform under her new “Courage” party on Wednesday.

Montgomery says the region’s population of 175,000 residents would be better served if Montreal’s larger district were divided.

“This is not just something we dream of one day,” says Montgomery. “It really comes after a lot of consulting with people and knocking on doors and hearing what people have to say,” Montgomery added.

“Even just the efficiency of snow removal, garbage collection and recycling. All those things could be managed better if it were smaller, if it were divided in two. “

But other mayoral candidates say the mere mention of dividing the municipality is disappointing. Ensemble Montreal mayoral candidate Lionel Pérez says the focus must be on citizens.

“Everything else is really a distraction,” says Pérez. “Cleaner parks, better sidewalks, more Côte-des-Neiges – NDG money for a fairer distribution of funds,” he added.

Both Projet Montréal and the new Mouvement Montréal party are newcomers to the political game. Both say they will offer a new perspective, but dividing the municipality is not an option.

“We want to revitalize that neighborhood,” says Mouvement Montreal mayoral candidate Matthew Kerr.

‘We need to instill funding for community organizations, mentoring programs, affordable sports programs in the township. Now is not the time to leave the Côte-des-Neiges. “

Projet Montreal mayoral candidate Gracia Kasoki Katahwa says diversity between CDN-NDG should be celebrated.

The story continues below the ad.

“Having two public administrations is just more fees at a time when we need more money for important items like social housing and affordable housing,” says Katahwa.

Sue Montgomery did not say whether she would rather be the mayor of the Côte-des-Neiges-NDG or how the two districts would be divided, but it would be something her party would begin to discuss if elected.
