CBC/Radio-Canada suspends its activities in Russia


CBC/Radio-Canada temporarily suspends journalistic activities in Russia for security reasons.

Deeply concerned by the adoption of a new law in Russia that would seek to criminalize neutral and impartial journalistic coverage of the current situation in Ukraine and Russia, CBC/Radio-Canada has decided to cease its activities there.

“In these exceptional circumstances, in order to ensure the safety of our journalists and our employees stationed in Moscow, we are temporarily suspending our journalistic activities in Russia, the time to clarify the scope of this new law,” said the company. ‘State, Friday.

Under this new law, “false information” about the Russian army could lead to 15-year prison sentences for their authors.

In a press release, CBC/Radio-Canada announced that it was adding its voice to those of the Global Task Force (GTM) for public media, which includes the BBC and France Télévisions, in order to support the freedom of press and the right of citizens to have access to reliable and independent information.

On Wednesday, the GTM also said it condemned the Russian attack on a television tower and broadcasting infrastructure in Kyiv, believed to be an effort to deprive Ukrainian citizens of reliable information in the midst of war.
