Carlos Slim is among the main winners of the 5G network tender in Brazil

Telefonica Brazil, TIM and Of course from America Movil won the main lots for the telecommunications service on Thursday 5G on Brazil, in an auction carried out by the National Telecommunications Agency.

Telefónica Brasil offered 420 million reais (75.1 million dollars) for a block of national frequencies on 3.5 GHz, while TIM offered 351 million reais for another on the same frequency and Claro, 338 million reais.

The fourth national block on the frequency ran out of bids as the other 12 smaller companies competing in the auction did not submit bids and the three largest operators were prevented from contesting as they had previously won.

Named by members of the government as the “largest frequency auction” ever held in Brazil, the tender is not intended to raise money, according to its organizers, but to obtain billions of reais in investments in the sector over the next few years.

The auction began more than an hour and a half late, being suspended at the beginning due to a ceremony without social distancing among the attendees, in which the president Jair Bolsonaro He spoke on topics including difficulties in obtaining licenses for jet ski pilots and fishing in Lake Itaipu.

In addition to the 3.5 GHz frequency, which allows the so-called “pure 5G”, the 700 MHz national 4G band was also sold in the auction, which had not been awarded in 2014. The winner of this frequency was Winity Telecom, controlled by the Patria investment group.

With the victory, Winity, which offered 1,427 million reais, about 805% of the price of the public call, will be a new national mobile phone operator, which will compete with Telefónica Brasil, TIM and Claro, the agency’s representatives said in the auction.
