The NHL team announced Tuesday they’d signed 22-year-old winger Nils Åman to an entry-level contract. Because of his age, it is a two-year contract.

Åman was drafted in 2020 by the Colorado Avalanche, but wasn’t offered a contract before June 1 this year and became a free agent as a result.

He skated with Leksands of the Swedish Hockey League in 2021-22, picking up 14 points in 51 games.

“Nils is a smart hockey player who plays with speed and has a strong work ethic,” Canucks GM Patrik Allvin said in a statement. “He possesses a good two-way game, and we look forward to seeing his continued development of him on both sides of the ice with the Canucks organization.”

Those who have watched him play say he’s a smart offensive winger, with good size and skating ability. He needs to hone his skills if he’s going to make the NHL, but if he does make the show, he has a chance to be a third-line winger.

Cam Robinson, director of video scouting for Elite Prospects, said signing Åman was an interesting bet being made by the Canucks.

“I don’t mind this signing at all,” he said. “Rangy center with good speed and has really developed his defensive game. He played 3rd line minutes in the SHL the last couple of years. He has a deceptive release that can get off quickly. He really popped in the J20 a couple of years ago.”

“I think his most portable skill is his play through the neutral zone. He is strong positionally away from the puck, and takes good smart routes with it.

Åman will almost certainly start next season in Abbotsford.
