Candlelight vigil planned for victim of police-involved shooting in Markham

A candlelight vigil is planned for the man who died following a police-involved shooting.

Moses Erhirhie died following an interaction with police Jan. 21 after a call “to investigate a suspicious person” was made to police.

A woman who was at the scene was arrested following the incident. She was not charged and was released within 12 hours of the incident, York Regional Police said.

Erhirhie’s family, who live in Etobicoke, say since the shooting they have been kept almost entirely in the dark by the province’s police watchdog, known as the Special Investigations Unit, and the coroner.

“It’s important to attend to remember a life that matters,” Dave Bosveld, a community member and advocate, said. “Someone was killed and we do not know the circumstances. People aren’t able to sit with that grief and do nothing. This is the best thing to do to honor the person that’s passed.”

The vigil will take place at the site of the incident Feb. 3 at 8 pm at the Freshway Supermarket, 3275 Hwy. 7, near Fairburn Drive, in Markham.

The SIU urges anyone who may have information about this investigation, including video or photos, to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 or online at siu.on.ca/en/appeals.php.
