Canal Premium, the consolidation of Fox Sports in Mexico

Fox Sports takes a fourth step towards its consolidation within the sports content industry in Mexico. As of April 2, the television station will inaugurate its fourth channel, called Fox Sports Premiumwith which it seeks to connect to more market niches, since it will have products and voices specialized in topics such as Formula 1 and the UFC.

After owning Fox Sports 1, 2 and 3, now comes the Premium version, which will be available through pay television and streaming systems. For the first option, the estimated cost is 110 pesos per month and an add-on that allows subscribers to benefit from TV Everywhere through the FOX Sports App. As for the service streamingthe estimated cost is 130 pesos per month.

“Fox Sports Premium became a necessity for Fox Sports because of the content we had, because in 2022 we got even more content and then, to give people another option, this channel was born, which is going to have several surprises. Another reason is that, to be a competitive company in restricted television at this time, you must have a Premium channel and provide good service there, that is why we think it is necessary,” he told El Economista, Raul Orvananosbroadcaster and soccer analyst on Fox Sports.

The inaugural Fox Sports Premium event on April 2 will be Wrestlemaniabut it will also have other types of sports in its variety of content: WWE, UFC, Formula 1, MX League, Women’s MX League, Europe LeagueConference League, CONCACAF Champions League, NFL, MLB and various boxing features. Its main analysts include Luis Manuel ‘Chacho’ López, a leading specialist in motorsports in Mexico, as well as Rafael Marquez Lugo in soccer and Jimena Sanchez in fights.

According to data shared by the television station itself to this newspaper, Fox Sports is the leading provider within the category of sports content on pay television in Mexico, since it has 52.1% of the audience. Also this year, for the first time, Fox Sports is the exclusive owner of the Formula 1 championship, an event that has caused more and more stir in Mexico thanks to the leading role of the Jalisco driver Sergio Pérez with the Red Bull team.

“Today we have content that we did not have before on Fox Sports screens, aimed at niche consumers such as fans of F1, WWE, UFC or Premier Boxing Champions. We are looking for Fox Sports Premium to have the same penetration as its existing linear channels in the near future,” added a spokesperson for the television station. It should be noted that Fox Sports’ core target is the age range between 18 and 49 years old, as well as socioeconomic segments A, B and C+.

Since June 2021, Fox Sports rights in Mexico have been acquired by Lauman Group. The president of said group, Manuel Arroyo, stated at the time of the purchase that the objective is “to continue competing in the market and developing sports so that the channel continues to be the leader in the segment, giving a ‘refreshed’ to everything that it was being done. The channel was the same for approximately two years, but now we are going to put a little more technology to continue catapulting Fox as a leader”, according to the Expansión newspaper.

In that sense, the inclusion of Fox Sports Premium fulfills the objective, describes Raúl Orvañanos: “For us this new channel means a lot, when I came to Fox Sports a few years ago I only had one channel, now there are three and a Premium, that It means that we are getting into the level of international television stations, where they all have their Premium channels, that was something that was missing from a television station as important as Fox Sports”.
