Canada sanctions Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich


Ottawa on Thursday announced new sanctions against Russian officials and collaborators close to Vladimir Putin’s regime, including the owner of English soccer club Chelsea, Roman Abramovich.

In addition to the 55-year-old billionaire, Trudeau government sanctions target Ella Aleksandrovna Pamfilova, Alisher Burkhanovich Usmanov, Elena Evgenievna Morozova and Igor Vladimirovich Yanchuk.

These personalities “have been sanctioned because of their complicity in President Putin’s decision to invade a peaceful and sovereign country,” Ottawa said in a statement.

About 30 entities operating in the finance, defense and energy sectors have also been sanctioned by Canada for their role enabling or supporting “President Putin’s unprovoked and unjustifiable invasion of Ukraine”. .
