Bulgaria asks the EU to prepare to send oxygen and UCIS for the covid

Bulgaria has asked Brussels to activate the EU Civil Protection Mechanism before the possibility that you need to send doctors, oxygen and ucis beds faced with the threat of hospital collapse due to the uncontrolled level of infections, hospitalizations and deaths from covid-19. The Minister of Health, Stoycho Katsarov, announced today that this request has been approved by Brussels, although he clarified that it is a preventive measure that is not yet necessary to start up.

“We have no imminent need for help, but the situation is serious and the crisis is not over. There is a risk that the situation will get worse and then we would need additional equipment,” the minister told bTV broadcaster. This mechanism provides for the delivery of medical oxygen, assisted breathing systems, intensive care beds and medical personnel.

Less vaccinated

Bulgaria is the EU country with the least population vaccinated against COVID-19, only 22.7% of the total, and it has been marking two weeks daily maximums of infections and deaths. On Tuesday, a record number of 334 deaths was reached in 24 hours, ten times more than a month ago.

The data released today reveal a reduction in the number of infections and deaths, the intensive care units are already at 95% of their capacity.

The evolution of the covid is also very worrying in Romania, with more than 300 deaths a day and about 19,000 hospitalized, 10% of which are in ucis. A lots of hospitals continue to collapse or at the limit of their capacities, which has forced the transfer of dozens of patients to other countries and the suspension of non-urgent hospitalizations.

Less than a third of the Romanian population has received the full course of a vaccine, making Romania the second least vaccinated country in the EU, only ahead of Bulgaria.
