Brooks: A Wake-Up Breakfast for Men’s Health

.

Men have a suicide rate three times higher than women. On average, they die five years earlier and are 67 percent less likely to visit a doctor. And, of the 13 leading causes of death in Canada, including all cancers, cardiovascular disease, accidental and non-accidental trauma, men outnumber women in 12 of the 13 causes. However, men are often stubborn and stoic about their physical and mental health issues.

So listen up guys. It is time to wake up! And waking up was the theme of the inauguration of the Charity Breakfast and Wellness Fair for Women for Men’s Health that took place on September 29 at the Hotel Arts. Women for Men’s Health was founded by Dr. Shelley Spaner, a radiologist and board member of the Prostate Cancer Center. Women for Men’s Health works within the center to raise awareness of strategies to remove barriers that stand in the way of men’s health. Additionally, it empowers women to create a support network for the men in their lives.

.

Nearly 200 guests attended the inaugural breakfast that featured a wellness fair and speeches from two keynote speakers. Fair participants included Mayfair Diagnostics, Center for Suicide Prevention Buddy UP, Headversity and Wellspring Alberta.

Ector shared his personal experiences of physical and mental trauma growing up. Ector discovered that he did not need to suffer alone and found support through recovery groups like AA, his wife Maryann, and his family.

Other highlights included remarks from Spaner, Prostate Cancer Center Executive Director Jeff Davison, emcee Pat Steinberg (co-host of The Big Show on Sportsnet 960), and free PSA testing at the ManVan.
