Break out the sunscreen! Toronto will see warm weather and clear skies this weekend: meteorologist

The warm weather and clear skies reaching Toronto this weekend are traveling alongside the storms hitting northern Ontario, meteorologist Ryan Rozinskis said.

Environment Canada forecasts Toronto will see sunny skies midday on Saturday with temperatures reaching 10 C. The city will continue to warm up under clear skies to a high of 18 C on Sunday and parts of the GTA could reach 20 C, Rozinskis said. He added rain showers would begin Sunday evening and the warmth will continue into Monday.

The weekend could bring Toronto’s warmest day of 2022, with March 31 reaching this year’s high of 18.2 C.

“This time of year, the sun can be very strong,” Rozinskis said. “SW [Sunday] would be a good day for sunscreen.”

But northern Ontario may not see the same sunshine. Warnings for Dryden, Kenora and Sioux Narrows predict snow, ice pellets and heavy rainfall this weekend. The statements also warn of flash floods.

Environment Canada is also watching for winter storms around the Pikangikum First Nation, Sachigo Lake and Kasabonika Lake this weekend. The advisory stated northern Ontario may see likes of wind up to 70 km/h and snowfall accumulations of up to 30 centimeters.

Northern Ontario saw bouts of winter weather earlier in April. Last week, Manitoba and parts of northwestern Ontario saw snowfall and strong winds during a spring blizzard.

Meanwhile, parts of southern Ontario could reach almost 30 C on Sunday, with Environment Canada forecasting a high of 28 C in Windsor and 26 C in London.

The wide range of forecasts are all part of the same weather system, Rozinskis said. He noted the warm weather reaching Toronto is traveling along the southeast edge of a spring storm. That’s why I added the city will cool back down mid-week to temperatures around 10 C.

“The wind pattern is helping to bring in the warmer temperatures, while at the same time bringing cooler temperatures in behind it,” Rozinskis said.

I have added that the pattern, called a Colorado low, is normal for April.

“April is a very transitional period,” Rozinskis said.

“It’s kind of like a battle between winter and summer weather.”
