Brazil posts record trade surplus in 2021

Brazil posted a record trade surplus of $ 61 billion in 2021, official data showed on Monday, and the Economy Ministry expects that figure to hit $ 79.4 billion this year due to a decline in imports.

In 2021, exports from one of the largest economies in Latin America reached a record $ 280.4 billion, mainly due to an increase in prices amidst the Covid-19 pandemic, while imports totaled 219,400 million.

There was an increase in exports mainly to the United States, which grew by 44.9 percent. Sales to China, the largest trading partner of Brazil, increased 28 percent.

The largest increase in imports in 2021 came from goods from the Mercosur trade bloc, with an increase of 44.7 percent, followed by U.S with 41.3% and China with 36.7 percent.

By 2022, the government’s expectations are for a 1.4% increase in exports to $ 284.3 billion, while imports are expected to fall 6.6% to $ 204.9 billion, the ministry said. Forecasts point to more moderate growth in world trade this year.
