Body of Missing St. Catharines Swimmer Recovered from Lake in Norfolk: OPP | The Canadian News

The body of a 25-year-old swimmer who disappeared Saturday in Lake Erie was recovered, according to the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).

In a post on social media, Const. Ed Sanchuk said the St. Catharines man was one of four swimmers involved in a rescue effort at Port Burwell Provincial Park on the afternoon of September 11.

Sanchuk said the deceased, Daniel Sosa-Zerebecka, was located shortly after noon Monday about eight miles east of the park.

Investigators say two people were swimming in the lake when they both became distressed. Two others went to help, but were eventually affected by the water as well.

Three of the four were rescued by a “good Samaritan” wearing a life-saving ring.

The story continues below the ad.

“It is never easy for a family member to receive a knock on the door of a police officer,” Sanchuk said, offering his condolences at his post.

“They know that their relative is not in the water and then they knock on the door again to say that they have located the deceased.”

Sanchuk did not reveal whether any of the swimmers were wearing a life jacket, but suggested that anyone heading to the lake on the weekend should consider wearing one.

An autopsy was scheduled for Tuesday, September 14.
