BMV and Biva close the first day of 2022 with losses

The Mexican stock exchange (BMV) closed with a moderate loss on the first day of 2022. The local share market fell in a market that is still attentive to the advance of the variant Covid-19 omicron and that it is committed to a period of increases in the interest rates of the main central banks of the world.

The benchmark index S&P/BMV IPC, made up of the shares of the 35 issuers with the highest value by capitalization and liquidity in Mexico, ended with a loss of -0.62% to 52,941.01 units. The index FTSE BIVA, the main of the Institutional Stock Exchange (Biva), lost -0.59% to a level of 1,094.73 units.

Within the benchmark, most of its components finished in negative territory, with 24 in red and 11 in green. This decline was led by Grupo Elektra shares, with -5.82%; Megacable, with -4.11%; Vesta real estate, with -4.10%, and Walmex shares, with -2.77 percent.

Investors gamble because Federal Reserve (Fed) will continue on the path of increasing its interest rates this year to respond to high inflation, something that could limit the performance of stocks. Investors are also keeping an eye on the progress of the Omicrond e Covid.19 variant.
