Bill Murray on ‘Inappropriate Behavior’ complaint: ‘It’s been quite an education for me’

Bill Murray discussed the “inappropriate behavior” accusation against him on the set of be deadly for the first time on Saturday.

speaking to CNBC At the 2022 Berkshire Hathaway Annual Meeting of Stockholders, the actor spoke at length about the situation that put production on the film on hold amid an investigation into the incident.

“I had a different opinion of a woman I was working with,” Murray said. “I did something that I thought was funny, and it wasn’t taken that way.”

He continued, “The company, the movie studio, wanted to do the right thing, so they wanted to check everything, investigate it, and they stopped production.”

Murray did not detail what exactly prompted the “inappropriate behavior” accusation, nor did he reveal which co-worker filed the complaint.

“But as of now, we are talking and we are trying to make peace with each other. I think that’s where the real problem is, between our peace,” Murray said. “We are both professionals. We like the work of others. I think we like each other, and if you can’t really get along and trust each other, there’s no point in continuing to work together or make a movie as well.”

Murray added that he was “very optimistic” that he and the woman will “make peace” that would allow them to resume working together on the Aziz Ansari-directed film.

“It’s been quite an education for me,” said a rueful Murray. “And I feel like if I don’t see that, you know the world is different than it was when I was a little kid. What I always thought was fun when I was a little kid isn’t necessarily the same as what’s fun now. Things change and times change, so it’s important for me to understand that. And I think the most important thing is that it is the best for the other person. I thought about it, and if it’s not what’s best for the other person, it doesn’t matter what happens to me.”

Lucy Liu previously accused Murray of “inexcusable and unacceptable” behavior on the set in 2000 Charlie’s Angelswhere he alleged that Murray was “hurling insults at him,” as he revealed in a 2021 interview with the Los Angeles Times. In his interview on Saturday, Murray said that he has been reflecting on what happened recently as a catalyst for change.

“I really think he’s a very sad puppy who can’t learn anymore,” Murray said. “I don’t want to be that sad dog, and I have no intention of being that. The thing that would make me happiest would be to put my boots on and for us both to go back to work and be able to trust each other and work at the job that we’ve both spent a lot of time developing the skill at, and hopefully do something that’s good not just for the two of us, but for a whole team of people, a whole team of filmmakers. and the film studio as well.”

He added: “I feel like I’ve learned more in the last year or two than I could have learned in a whole decade of my life before.”

Shortly after be deadly Beginning production on March 28, the film, which stars Murray, Ansari, Seth Rogen and Keke Palmer, informed its team that work would be halted amid unspecified “inappropriate behavior” complaints.

“Late last week, we became aware of a complaint and immediately investigated it,” Searchlight Pictures wrote in an email to the production team. “After reviewing the circumstances, it has been decided that production cannot continue at this time.”
