Biden and Putin, meeting imminent on Ukraine

Stockholm.- The American president Joe Biden and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin They could maintain a direct dialogue to avoid a “nightmare scenario of military confrontation” in Ukraine, indicated in this city, the heads of diplomacy of both countries.

Amid tensions around Ukraine, the Russian minister, Serguei Lavrov, demanded from the United States “long-term security guarantees” on its borders, in particular so that the former Soviet territory does not enter NATO.

Both Lavrov and his counterpart Antony Blink they met in Sweden, on the sidelines of the ministerial meeting of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Riabkov said Moscow expects a “contact” between Joe Biden and Vladimir Putin to take place in the “coming days.” For his part, the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, confirmed that both leaders will speak “probably” in the “near future”.

“We are deeply concerned about Russia’s plans to launch aggression against Ukraine,” Blinken told Lavrov.

Blinken, however, also made a gesture and stated that he was willing to “facilitate” the implementation of the Minsk accords, sealed after Russia annexed Crimea and which are intended to resolve the conflict in eastern Ukraine between Kiev. and the pro-Russian separatists.
