Before Uniore, Lorenzo Córdova warns of undemocratic intentions in Latin America

The president of the National Electoral Institute (OTHER), Lorenzo Córdova Vianello, warned during the Conference of the Inter-American Union of Electoral Bodies (Uniore), that the narratives of disqualification and fraud to undermine elections when democracy is already part of reality, expose anti-democratic intentions such as those experienced in the United States with the assault on the Capitol.

Within the framework of XV Uniore that took place in Dominican RepublicCordova affirmed that the disqualification of electoral bodies is not a new phenomenon in Latin American democracies, but rather that what is new is where this disqualification comes from.

I do not remember that these disqualifications came from the governments or the ruling circuits, much less with the intensity and stridency of the discourse that is occurring in recent times, ”he said.

Córdova Vianello warned about the attacks that are directly aimed at trying to undermine the autonomy of the electoral bodies, “to weaken them or, in any case, to build narratives that can be used by political actors based on the electoral results.”

“It is a phenomenon typical of antidemocratic demagogy and the narrative contrary to the political stability of our nations and, above all, contrary to the natural and inevitable loyalty to the rules of the democratic game that is indispensable on the part of political actors”, said before the heads of the electoral bodies of Latin America.

The presiding counselor of the OTHER He said that some of the challenges faced throughout the region are the organization of elections in the midst of the pandemic, polarization and intolerance, disinformation and fake news, as well as attacks on electoral authorities.

He considered it essential to reinforce all the mechanisms for the democratic control of power, vindicate the bodies that emerged from the Constitutional State of Law and reinforce the power controls to technical and jurisdictional bodies and, of course, social controls to avoid the abuse of power.

He expressed the importance of electoral bodies becoming explanatory agencies that counteract disqualification narratives, as well as disinformation to detail the technical processes that are deployed to guarantee respect for the vote.

“The authorities have to convert or deploy unprecedented, pedagogical and public explanation capacities, because many times an electoral process can depend on the ability of an electoral authority to transmit a message of confidence regarding the elections on TikTok,” he mentioned.

“We cannot pretend that doing our work in a technical and operational way is sufficient to gain public trust and dismantle the accusations, we have to deploy new mechanisms, new narrative capacities that are indispensable today to guarantee the integrity of the elections,” he added.

Nevertheless, Lorenzo Cordova He stressed that in Mexico there are positive results during the last June elections, where even with a pandemic, polarization, false news, fraud narratives and attacks on electoral institutions, the INE delivered good accounts to Mexican society.

The INE said that the expenses of its President Counselor to participate in the Magisterial Conference were borne by UNIORE.
