Dr. Olivier Clerk, recognized as a leader in diagnostic imaging, is among those who have chosen Calgary to establish their clinics.

Clerk grew up in Ottawa and soon became interested in the sciences. He attended medical school at the University of Sherbrooke in Quebec, where he completed his residency in diagnostic radiology with an interest in pain management. He earned a fellowship at Harvard Medical School and another at the Spine Fracture Institute in Edmond, Oklahoma.

After the common cold, back pain is the second most common reason for primary care physician visits. A new understanding of treatment has led to the development of new injectable biomaterials to treat such pain.

Clerk became an expert in minimally invasive spine, treating painful conditions and even saving lives by repairing spinal problems with an image-guided needle.

He was hired to work in Edmonton for two years, but then decided to open his own practice in Calgary in 2021, opening his first Beam Radiology location in 96the NE Avenue in Harvest Hills. A second has opened in Royal Oak and a third is serving patients in Canmore.

The need to help more patients has meant opening another location here.

Clerk says it took time to find one due to the large magnetic field of the advanced equipment used by the clinic: a reinforced building had to be found that was also a good distance away from the noise and vibrations caused by trains and vehicles.

He sought advice from Gary McKelvie, president of Core Commercial Real Estate, who found an ideal 12,000-square-foot building in Trinity Hills that has since been outfitted with state-of-the-art equipment.

Clerk’s reputation as one of the top five professionals in his field means that other specialists are willing to work under him.

Today, Beam has a core team of specially trained radiologists, including Drs. Sarah Koles and Chirag Patel, and healthcare professionals who provide a new approach to personalized patient care.

Beam physicians help preserve and enhance the quality of life for their patients by working closely with all team members to offer a full range of diagnostic, obstetric and interventional imaging services, ensuring the smartest decisions for provide patients and professionals with the best level of service.
