the Chefs’ Table Society of BC and the Pacific Prawn Fishermen’s Association announced the Spot Prawn Festival will return to Fishermen’s Wharf at False Creek on May 15.
Back in action with in-person events following a two-year pause due to COVID-19, the event will include free cooking demonstrations and family friendly activities, along with a ticketed Spot Prawn Brunch for $65 per person (plus tax and service fee) featuring six spot prawn dishes prepared by local chefs. The brunch, which boasts two sittings starting at 11:30 am and 1:30 pm, has 19-plus age restrictions due to the inclusion of free beer and wine tastings from local sponsors. Tickets must be purchased in advance.
Festival attendees can also enjoy a 10-ounce bowl of Chefs’ Table Chowder — a New England Chowder in lieu of the usual boil — which comes with a fresh-baked bun, for $10. The festival organizers have set up one-hour time slots between 11 am and 3 pm for the chowder chow-downs, according to a news release. Chowder tickets can be bought in advance or during the event.
The annual fundraising festival, which started in 2006, helps to support the society’s scholarship programs for local culinary students. The funds earned during the festival events also go toward the Chefs Table Society’s “long-term legacy project,” the CTS Culinary Center. The province’s prawn fishing season opens May 5, with fresh catches set to be available for purchase at Fishermen’s Wharf from the afternoon of May 6 through mid-June.
