BC SPCA takes in 31 abused dogs from ‘irresponsible’ breeder

The BC SPCA has taken in 31 dogs who were living in deplorable conditions at the home of an “irresponsible breeder” in Clearwater.

The dogs, which include dachshunds, poodles, poodle mixes and mini-Schnauzers, were surrendered after an animal cruelty investigation.

“The dogs were owned by an irresponsible breeder who kept them in a dark building without heat or proper bedding for the dogs,” the SPCA’s Eileen Drever said in a statement. “It was very unsanitary, with an overwhelming smell of ammonia.”

Drever said the owners failed to provide veterinary care, enrichment or socialization to the dogs that they “desperately needed.”

An older dachshund had an abdominal mass so large that it was crawling on the ground. When examined by a veterinarian at the BC SPCA, it was determined that the mass was a tumor that had metastasized, requiring the dog to be euthanized to put her out of her misery.

“This is an incredibly sad situation all around,” Drever said. “These dogs were treated like commodities and not only face physical health problems, but also suffer psychologically.

“Dogs are very afraid. Many could not be touched at all and the dogs cowered in fear when the owner approached.”

Many displayed repetitive behaviors, such as pacing back and forth in their kennels, a sign of lack of mental stimulation.

Drever said it’s an example of why people should do their research when considering purchasing a dog from a breeder.

“This breeder met potential buyers in parking lots, which is a red flag that the animals are not receiving proper care,” Drever said. “If they don’t allow you to visit the dogs where they are boarded, don’t buy them a dog.”

All of the dogs need extensive rehabilitation, so it is unclear when they might be available for adoption. In the meantime, the BC SPCA will recommend charges, Drever said.
