A second case of monkeypox has been confirmed in BC

The BC Center for Disease control confirmed the province’s second case on Friday.

Like the initial case, confirmed on June 6, the second case was also detected in the Vancouver Coastal Health region. The cases are related to travel and not connected to each other.

Federal officials say there are now 168 confirmed cases of monkeypox in Canada.

The Public Health Agency of Canada says the vast majority of those cases — 141 — have been reported in Quebec. There are also 21 in Ontario and four in Alberta as of Friday.

Canada’s chief public health officer says all infections have been in men aged 20 to 69.

Dr. Theresa Tam told a news conference that many cases have been linked to sexual contact with other men, but the virus can spread to anyone who has had close physical contact with an infected person.
