Battlefords North Stars Hockey Team To Wear Orange ‘Every Child Matters’ Jerseys | The Canadian News

A hockey team in North Battleford, Sask., Is taking it upon itself to honor Indian residential school students. The Battlefords North Stars will wear redesigned orange jerseys with the “Every Child Matters” logo in their January 7 game.

The initiative is a way to acknowledge and acknowledge the truths of residential schools to your community and its surroundings.

“We thought, what better to do than to support the people around us?” said Kennedy Schmidt, North Stars office manager.

The North Stars will also have a record release where they will sell records during the second intermission. The pucks will be dropped to the ice and the puck closest to the center point will win half the winnings. The other half of the proceeds will be donated to Acahkos Awasisak, a group of the Battlefords Agency Tribal Chiefs (BATC) that supports survivors of residential schools.

The project coordinator for the residential school searches says the initiative is a step forward for reconciliation in the community.

“The community feels sorry for us and wants to do things well,” said Karen Whitecalf. “This is one way they can recognize what happened (with the residential schools).”

During Friday night’s game, the Battlefords North Stars will recognize the Red Pheasant Cree Nation for leasing their designated lands used for farming as a major fundraiser for the hockey team.

“They have done a lot for us and we want to show our appreciation for that,” said Schmidt.

Las Estrellas del Norte have invited indigenous leaders from the surrounding areas to attend and witness the event. Singer Falynn Baptiste of Red Pheasant Cree Nation will open the game by singing the national anthem.
