Avalanche bulletins issued for parts of the Rocky Mountains; 15 to 40 cm of snow are expected | The Canadian News

An atmospheric Pacific river that made its way inland has prompted Avalanche Canada to emit newsletters for parts of the Rocky Mountains.

Newsletters belong to Banff, glacier, Jasper, Kootenay and Yo Ho National Parks.

Avalanche Canada is forecasting Level 4, or very dangerous avalanche conditions, for those areas, with the exception of Jasper, which is Level 3, or considerable.

“An intense weather system arrives early Sunday morning with predicted snow amounts ranging from 15 to more than 40 cm depending on the weather model and strong to extreme westerly winds,” Avalanche Canada said in the bulletin.

“Another strong snow pulse is forecast for Monday. Freezing levels will be around 1,900 meters until things start to cool down Tuesday morning. “

“As new snow and wind come in, wind plates will form rapidly over the next few days and natural and human-caused avalanches are highly likely to occur on steep and loaded terrain,” Avalanche Canada said. “Be on the lookout for aerial hazards, as cornice failures are also likely to occur.”

In their qualifications, Avalanche Canada says that for Level 4, traveling in avalanche terrain is not recommended.
