Authorities and IP of Quintana Roo alert tourists about drug use


Cancun, QR. Before the Easter season, the tourist sector of Quintana Roo spreads a letter among visitors who will arrive in the state to warn them about the physical and legal risks involved in consuming drugs during their vacation stay.

The state government and hotel entrepreneurss Tourists are asked to sign this letter in their hotel registry in which they acknowledge that the consumption or transportation of illicit substances is penalized.

The document, which contains the seals of the Ministry of Tourism and the state government, is given to travelers upon arrival at the lodgings of cancunPuerto Morelos, Women IslandTulum, Cozumel, Riviera Maya, Mahahual and Chetumal, whose hotel associations agreed.

In it, they are asked for the full name of the owner of the lodging, as well as their signature; this after the various warnings not to buy drugs from drug dealers in beach places or night clubs.

“This is an informative document that must be signed by the visitor as aware of the information contained therein”, the text specifies.

“I have read and am aware of the legal consequences of the drug purchase in Mexico. Firma/Signature”, is added.

The distribution of the letter began this week, both at the Cancun International Airport and in the hotels “that voluntarily adhere to the campaign,” said the Secretary of Tourism of Quintana RooBernardo Cueto Riestra.

For his part, the president of the Cancun, Puerto Morelos and Isla Mujeres Hotel Association, Jesús Almaguer Salazar, an organization that together represents 207 hotels with 52,000 rooms, assured “we will gladly pass it on to our guests, to the tourists. The participation of the AMAV (Mexican Association of Travel Agencies) is also very important there, as they are the first contact with tourists to make them aware and explain what the consumption and purchase/sale of drugs in the destination implies”.

For his part, the Governor of Quintana Roo, Carlos Joaquín Gonzálezconsidered that in this drug campaign it is very important to be able to offer information to visitors and tourists about this illegal situation.

“It was important to tell them that in Mexico we have laws, we have to comply with them, as we also do when we go to their countries,” he said.

He also said that the campaign is essential for the safety of tourists and families in the state, since they are informative letters where people are aware that these conditions exist and will allow them to have more knowledge about the respective legal part.
