The club confirmed on Tuesday that Mista, who has served as a manager for the past two seasons, will not return next year. The club called it a mutual separation after their contract with the Canadian Premier League team expired.

“We want to thank Mista for believing in this project and helping us establish strong roots for Atlético Ottawa in the nation’s capital,” Atlético Ottawa CEO Fernando López said in a statement. “His willingness to take on this responsibility in what we knew would be a difficult first few years is a testament to his character and love of the game.

“We are grateful for all that he has invested in this team and we wish him great success in the next chapter of his coaching career.”

Mista was the first coach in franchise history. He was appointed to the position in March 2020, but the club did not adapt until August 2020 in the Charlottetown bubble. The club had six wins, eight draws and 14 losses in his tenure.

“I want to thank Atlético de Madrid for entrusting me with the responsibilities of this challenging and exciting project, the players and staff for understanding what we were trying to achieve, and all the Ottawa fans for believing in us,” said Mista. “I am proud of what we did during this difficult time and I know that the club will be successful for years to come.”
