Argentina will seek to reinforce its leadership hand in hand with Celac

Buenos Aires. In the midst of negotiations with the IMF for the government debt, Alberto Fernández is preparing to send a strong message to the United States: Argentina will assume the presidency of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac) in the next few hours to Washington, aligned with China and created as a sort of counterweight to the Organization of American States (OAS).

Foreign Minister Santiago Cafiero received the foreign ministers from Thursday to have a meeting with Alberto Fernández. In the closing of the document of the summit of foreign ministers of this Friday they will order that Argentina assume the presidency of the organism.

“If there are no surprises in the middle, Argentina will preside over Celac from Friday with unanimous support from the region to boost Latin American integration,” said a government official.

In this way, the move of Alberto Fernández, which has the endorsement of allies such as Nicaragua, Venezuela, Mexico, Chile and Bolivia, among other countries facing Washington, seeks to put Argentina as an important interlocutor in the region against the issues. from the United States and in line with the agreements advanced by Celac with China.

This is a move by Argentina with a high geopolitical impact since the government of Alberto Fernández is in the midst of tough negotiations with the IMF where the United States is one of the main obstacles in closing that understanding over the debt.

It is expected that after noon, Foreign Minister Santiago Cafiero and his counterpart from Mexico, Marcelo Ebrard, will announce the handover of the pro tempore presidency to Argentina.

Created just over a decade ago under the influence of Venezuelan Hugo Chávez, Celac has for years been the sphere that Nicaragua, Venezuela and Cuba have maintained to direct their criticism of the United States and its “interventionist policy” in Latin America.
