Archeology: Homo Georgicus, our ancestor from Georgia, is revealed little by little

Discoveries continue at the archaeological site of Dmanissi. Excavations in the village of Orozmani have brought to light several animal bones, shards of cut stone and tools, all 1.8 million years old.

The Dmanissi site is well known to researchers because human skulls have also been found there, also dating from the middle of the Paleolithic, in an area far removed from Africa, where the first hominids came from.

Davit Lortqipanidze, Director of the Georgian National Museum: “Dmanissi represents perhaps one of the most special time capsules, with 1.8 million years. It is a volcanic region where you have a very good conservation of the first prehistoric bones as well as an opportunity to have good dates, so we can say with certainty that all around here there has been a very active life of about 1.8 to 1.7 million years “.

The whole area would have been colonized by groups of Homo Erectus, ancestor – or cousin – of Homo Georgicus, arrived from Africa and on their way to Central Asia.

It is a joint team of Georgian and American archaeologists and students who are slowly but surely carrying out this new series of excavations.

“This site is really interesting, said this student scratching the ground, there is a skeleton there, bones of prehistoric animals, huge animals, it’s kinda interesting, and I hope, I don’t know, maybe I found something here actually, j ‘hope this is something “!

In recent years, fossilized remains of horses, mammoths, rhinos and ostriches have also been discovered.
