We have 67 units, with a presence in 25 states, in Nuevo León we hope to open 2 franchises in 2022 and another two in 2023 ”, he explained.

He commented that they still do not have units in the state, however, they find the market very attractive, because it is one of the most important states, where there is fertile ground, because there is a good culture to stay healthy.

The chain of gyms Anytime Fitness has a strong expansion program programmed and expects to have a growth of between 16 and 20 gyms per year, since enrollment has recovered by 82%, franchise sales have recovered 100% and due to the pandemic there are many stores available and that makes it easier to enter the market.

In Mexico, the restrictions imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic caused a decrease in the percentage of people who exercise in private facilities, from 23.9% in 2019 to 11.2% in 2020, according to the Sports Practice and Physical Exercise Module (Mopradef).

The profitability of the business is guaranteed in part thanks to the growing interest of the population to stay healthy, after conditions such as obesity were identified as risk factor in people with Covid-19. In Nuevo León, the first health problem is obesity, according to the state Health Secretariat.

Mopradef estimates that for 70% of physically active Mexicans, their main motivation is health care, with which this factor has gained ground compared to other motivations such as fun or looking good.

Impact

In 2019, before the impact of the pandemic, there were more than 210,000 sports clubs in the world, with more than 184 million members that generated a business of 96,000 million dollars, according to data from The International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association (IHRSA). The IHRSA in conjunction with Europe Active indicates that in 2020 the value of the industry decreased by approximately 40%, around 58,000 million dollars.

In the case of the global chain of gyms that has 6,500 subscribers, it had a factor that played in its favor in the pandemic, because the gyms were open from January to March and could have a bag that allowed them to continue paying rent, although there was support from landlords and suppliers.

Where it was more complicated was in the center of the country and in the state of Yucatán where the restrictions were greater ”, assured the manager.
