An overview of the telecommunications sector in 2021

According to The Competitive Intelligence Unit, the telecommunications sector currently ranks second, after the health sector, in terms of importance for the national productive apparatus. This fact is not surprising if we consider the preponderant role that telecommunications have in the daily activity of the country’s population, including companies, schools, government and homes.

Although during the second quarter of the year the telecommunications industry in Mexico saw a growth of 16.3% compared to the same period in 2020, the third quarter saw a significant decrease in its revenues. During that period, growth was only 2.2% vs. the same period of the previous year. The current context takes into account the recessive effects derived from the pandemic; inflation, lack of liquidity, as well as the global shortage of electronic components and bottlenecks in the manufacturing and logistics of services and products, which have complicated the commercialization of mobile equipment. During this period (3rd quarter 2021), there was an annual growth rate of the national productive apparatus (4.8%).

However, despite the complex macroeconomic situation, CIU anticipates a 6.1% recovery to reach a record figure of 527.7 billion pesos at the end of 2021. This amount considers the sale of voice services, connectivity and commercialization of mobile equipment .

The consulting firm estimates that this growth is due to various factors, including the recovery of economic activities and the generation of income from companies and households. In the same way, the release of contained spending during the pandemic and the first periods of the current administration, which has given economic activity a break.

With the recovery of mobility and national dynamism, telecommunications revenues will be distributed as follows: mobile telephony 57.3% of total revenues, followed by restricted TV and convergent services with 24.0% and, finally, the segment of fixed telephony with 18.7 percent.

In general, the telecommunications sector observed a clear positive trend, which indicates the growing relationship between human activity and dependence on telecommunications. Of course, improvements and efficiencies in the sector such as value-added packages or higher download speeds and simplicity in contracting services are factors that allow greater and faster growth in the industry.

As the industry continues to recover and mature, it will be important to promote greater competition in the sector and careful service from operators.

I wish my appreciative readers a good 2022.
