AMLO claims to have no plan to generate coal-based energy

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador affirmed that he has no plan to build plants that produce energy from coal or fuel oil.

“We do not have any plans to build plants that produce energy either with coal or with fuel oil. Moreover, we are now investing to process fuel oil and convert it into gasoline, which is why it is an investment of 60,000 million pesos in Tula, to give continuity to a work that had been left unfinished, a coker, and this will mean less pollution, less use of fuel oil, “said the president during his morning conference.

The head of the federal Executive said that the country only has two coal plants in Coahuila, but only one plant is working. He indicated that there is a fuel oil and coal plant in Guerrero. “Nothing to do with what they produce from coal in the United States and Germany,” he said.

The country’s first president said that his energy plan includes three actions.

“What we are proposing are three types of plants: a solar energy park in Puerto Peñasco, Sonora; the modernization so far of12 hydroelectric plants, which are going to change turbines and equipment, and this will mean generating more energy with the same uncontaminated water, and it is also clean and cheap energy ”, he said.

“And a combined cycle thermoelectric plant for the Yucatan peninsula, one Mérida and another in Valladolid to meet the demand in the peninsula,” he said.

The politician said that in 2013 he lacked people to stop the energy reform that was approved that year in Congress, and insisted that said constitutional and legal change did not mean a significant investment by the private initiative in power generation.

He reiterated that Pemex currently contributes 98% of the crude. “A hoax, a scam, the so-called rounds, or what the privatization of oil meant,” he said.

“Why don’t we cancel those agreements? Because we do not want to give elements to say: it is being expropriated, the agreements are not being respected, the rule of law is not being respected. No, there it is, it is like a testimony to corruption ”, he argued.

Meanwhile, President López Obrador stated that there are 60 dams in the country, although not all have turbines to generate energy.

“For example, the Picacho dam in Sinaloa is already operating, it is supplying water to Mazatlán, which now has enough water. We are going to build an aqueduct to bring water to other municipalities in Sinaloa, to Concordia, because this usually happens, there is the Concordia dam and in the municipality of there is no water; then we promised to build the aqueduct “, he said.
