AMDA lowers its forecast for auto sales this year due to chip shortage

One month after the start of 2022, the Mexican Association of Automotive Dealers (AMDA) lowered its auto sales forecast for this year to 1 million 16,000 units, that is, 22,000 light vehicles less than its estimate made in January.

William Rosalespresident of the AMDAexplained that there is a limited availability of car inventory in the dealerships, given the increase in the affectation of the supply of semiconductors faced by automakers in Mexico and the rest of the world.

Last January, the AMDA had projected to market 1 million 39,000 units by the end of 2022, however, the semiconductor shortage crisis has impacted the supply of vehicles.

“Starting 2022, the market continues below the sales levels of 2019 by 29.5% in annual comparison, with a significant gap for its recovery. The main factor continues to be the lack of inventory, as well as a high level in the price indices, both general (+7.13%) and vehicles (+8.76%) in annual comparison with data as of the first half of January 2021 Rosales explained.

For the coming months, the forecast of high uncertainty regarding the supply level continues, additionally facing the deteriorating economic environmentabounded.
