High school students are almost three times more likely to drink excessively.

The situation is particularly worrying among those over 15 years old. In Secondary V, nearly one out of two teenagers declared that they had overconsumed at least once a month in the past year.

“From the age of 14, 15 and above all 16, we see that excessive consumption at least once a month concerns about four out of 10 young people. So it seems quite frequent and above all more frequent than what we could estimate before the pandemic,” explains Mélissa Généreux, public health expert.

According to the latter, there is no doubt that this increase in alcohol consumption is linked to the pandemic context.

“We wanted to understand why, and it turns out to be a little unsurprising that our young people who report a lot of symptoms of anxiety and depression are twice as likely to also report excessive alcohol consumption,” he says. -she.

Several young adults surveyed in the street admit to having increased their alcohol consumption.

“I think so, totally, because I spent a lot of time at home and I started working at home too. And it seems that I become more “slackeux” in this kind of moment, ”says a young man questioned as to whether he has been drinking more since the start of the pandemic.

“The reason we were doing it, which is no longer a social reason, but which is more of a survivalist or species reason…something like that. Well yes, to forget, ”says another young person interviewed.
