Albertans Get New Digits With New Area Code Introduced in April | The Canadian News

Next April, you will start to see a new area code for Alberta.

Along with 403, 587, 780 and 825, the new phone numbers will start with 368.

The Canadian Radio, Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) said it intends to meet the growing demand for new digits.

“Introducing a new area code creates millions of additional phone numbers without affecting existing numbers,” said Kelly T. Walsh, program manager for the Canadian Numbering Manager.

The new area code will be phased in throughout the province starting April 23, 2022.

The numbers with the new 368 area code will only be assigned to customers once there are no longer enough numbers with the existing area codes.

The first area code, 403, was introduced in Alberta in 1947.

In 1999, 780 were brought in to cover Edmonton and northern Alberta.

And, as demand for mobile phones grew, in 2008 the 587 area code was added and 825 was introduced in 2016.
